How Platforms Decide Who You Are
Before a single frame plays, services like SonyLIV and Hotstar run three checks:
- Geolocation: is your IP registered in the target country?
- IP classification: is this a datacenter, an office, or a home/mobile network?
- Behavior: how many sessions share this IP, and does activity look abnormal?
Most VPNs pass check #1. Check #2 is where most of them die.
How Each IP Type Gets Treated
Datacenter IPs: registered to cloud providers (AWS, Alibaba Cloud, etc.). Platforms consume commercial IP intelligence feeds that label hosting ranges as suspicious by default — expect playback refusal or forced low quality.
Residential broadband IPs: registered to telecom operators and assigned to homes. A proxy's residential IP is hard to separate from a real household connection, so platforms largely let them through. That scarcity is also why they cost more than server IPs.
Mobile network IPs (the winner): Jio alone has over 400 million mobile subscribers; Airtel and Vi add hundreds of millions more. Their exit IP pools are concentrated, genuinely shared, and behind every cell-tower exit sit thousands of real viewers. Blocking those ranges would mean blocking paying customers en masse — so platforms don't. Playback success rates on mobile exits are the highest of any class.
Why "Shared" Actually Helps
Intuition says shared IPs get banned faster. For mobile exits, reality says the opposite:
- A single carrier-grade NAT exit naturally serves huge concurrency; one more viewer changes nothing
- Your traffic blends statistically into real-user patterns
- Platform tolerance for mobile networks far exceeds tolerance for hosting ranges
